THE NEW ORLEANS RUNAWAYS

I'LL FLY AWAY!

In several of the classified ads I read, some of the runaways were only a few blocks away from the slave master's home, but it still took months in some cases before their cover was blown. In one ad the runaway was found in a brothel,  two others were hanging out under a street light with fake passes (permission slips), and a third was guilty of harboring her own child plus another runaway. The examples of the freedom network that evolved are too many to count, but most remained free until the Union arrived.
